2025 Volvo XC90 Plug-In Hybrid

Overview

Like most automakers, Volvo plans to go all electric and has ambitious deadlines to get there. The Swedish brand has pledged to overhaul its fleet to EVs by 2030. Along the way, cars like the 2025 Volvo XC90 Plug-In Hybrid will bridge the gas and electric eras. The XC90 Plug-In Hybrid’s pleasant combination of power, luxury, efficiency — with an added touch of Scandinavian style — makes it an attractive choice in a small group of rivals.

Based on the standard gas-powered Volvo XC90, the XC90 Plug-In Hybrid pairs an electric motor and battery pack with a turbocharged and supercharged four-cylinder engine. The 455-horsepower combination is good for 58 MPGe, 27 mpg combined when running solely on the gas engine, and an estimated 33 miles of electric-only range. Drivers with judicious accelerator habits can eke out most daily errands and some commute distances on battery power alone.

Efficiency isn’t the XC90 Plug-In Hybrid’s only virtue, though. Inside are the same luxurious accommodations found on its gas-powered counterpart, with seating for up to seven, top-shelf comfort from multi-adjustable seats, plush materials, and excellent driver visibility. An intuitive infotainment system, generous complement of active driver assistance features, and top safety scores make the plug-in one of the most well-rounded choices in its class.

Some competitors offer more cargo space, sportier performance, or more niche specialties. The Lincoln Aviator offers 60% more cargo space behind its upright third-row, while the BMW X5 xDrive50e is the choice for drivers who prefer to pitch their SUVs into turns with gusto. The Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe, meanwhile, deftly balances premium interior, plug-in efficiency, and signature Jeep off-road capability. Still, the XC90 Plug-In Hybrid’s all-around proficiency, class, and style make it a stand-out choice en route to a fully electric future.
